Cathay Pacific A350 BUSINESS CLASS | 15 Hours from Newark to Hong Kong – Hong Kong Video

Welcome to a Shanghai Flyer flight report, for those of you who already subscribed a warm welcome back 🙂

This is a review of my recent flight onboard Cathay Pacific A350-900 aircraft from Newark to Hong Kong, it is also my second time flying Cathay’s A350-900 aircraft. As you may tell from my review of CX890 in September, Cathay Pacific had adjusted the equipment on this route. It was previously operated by a three cabin 777-300ER with a total capacity of 340 pax. As of October,31st this year, Cathay Pacific switched the aircraft to their latest state of the art Airbus A350, with a total capacity of 280 pax. One of the reason for this adjustment is due to the low demand on the flight to Newark. Despite having a full cabin again when I fly, the flight to Newark is almost empty for 70 percent of the year, except for during holiday seasons when the demand peak with students and other Asian immigrants in New Jersey, Pennsylvania…

The flight out of Newark depart at 1AM in the morning from Terminal B. Cathay Pacific uses British Airways Galleries lounge. The lounge opens solely for this flight as it is the last departure of the evening. Because of the midnight departure, dinner service is abbreviated. There was no appetizer nor dessert. The meal service was efficient despite a full cabin. However, in the middle of the flight when my friend tried to order two snack items, wonton soup and the burger, he was declined by the cabin crew with an excuse that they need to be considerate for all passenger because it was a full cabin. That was an absolute disgrace and unacceptable excuse. As a revenue business class passenger, it is his entitlement to order anything from the snack menu at any time he wish upon, thus, there are utterly no excuses as to why my friend was not allowed to try all the items on the snack menu for a 16 hours ultra longhaul flight. I am currently in the process of composing a complaint through Cathay Pacific’s website regarding this issue. The entire crew on my flight was very mediocre. The Inflight Service Manager disappeared after we reached cruising altitude. Moreover, drinks I ordered throughout the flight was consistently being delivered to the wrong seat. After all, this was perhaps my most disappointing flight with Cathay Pacific this year and I sincerely hope I would see some improvements on my upcoming flight back to Newark on January,3rd.

  1. Thank you for another great review. I’d be VERY DISAPPOINTED if I was on that flight. The meal quality appears to be no better than premium economy. Even though they are a OneWorld partner, this video has subtly told me to book SQ on my next flight to Asia. Sad really. Did I detect a LOUD SNORER near you? 🙄

  7. Shangjai Flyer, did they swap the B77W with an A350 for that route? I was planning on taking it in the next few months but not sure if I want to now… I prefer to use the miles of a B777 first class.

  9. @shanghai flyer – yes please do complain, the meal service is quite mediocore – and this is not related to the airport location (well flights from pvg from my experience has been bad). CX mentioned they were taking steps to improve the business class menu as a priority. I just started flying CX this yr, but you are a veteran for CX, and the if the crew is not up to standard then they should be held accountable!

  10. Cathay's seats and hard product is lovely, but needs some refurbishment as its getting dated and signs of wear and tear quite apparent. The big change they urgently need to make is in their menu, the food is really average. To remain competitive in long haul they need to take que from Qatar

  15. CX used to be the best airlines in Asia.  Its so sad to see the drop of quality overall.  I flew from HK to Shanghai last year and the flight service was not impressed. It may be affected by the bad influences from mainland China customers… CX pilots are very good still though.

  16. This company will just tell lies. All to easy to make a big profit when you tell the customer one thing and then just goback on it some month later. They cost me 5 London Hong Kong returns. I even when to the head office and all the did was laugh.

  17. I used to be a flight attendant and mainly worked Business Class, and I don't ever recall running out of snacks on a long-haul flight. We would've gotten reamed by our supervisor if she'd gotten a complaint that we denied a paying passenger food items from the menu.

  18. I'll tell you. 15 hours, Business Class? Doesn't appear that there is a partition on the aisle side of the seat to offer at least some privacy. Don't expect an "Apartment". Would expect some enclosure on the aisle side.
