HONG KONG: Living in a Shoebox for $80/night? – Hong Kong Video

For the last 8 years in a row, Hong Kong has been ranked as the world’s most expensive city for housing and real estate.

It’s my 5th time in Hong Kong, and it’s not hard to see why when you observe how densely populated this mega city is. The 8,000+ skyscrapers of Hong Kong makes New York feel small — and I mean it!

Deanna and I arrived in Hong Kong yesterday, and I booked us one of the cheapest private rooms I could find online… It was $80 USD/night, and the entire room is smaller than our bathroom in Bangkok. We are living in a shoebox!

This video further explains our current living situation in Hong Kong, and the brutal living conditions that most people are facing here.

Have you ever been to Hong Kong? What are your thoughts on the steep prices?

  3. So true. That's why more and more HKers fantasise emigration.
Actually I think you should stay in New Territories next time. The rent is the same and you get a regular hotel room like you have in other countries.
Also the deposit thing. The $500 deposit also helps to ensure customers not to vandalise or steal things in hotel rooms.
I don't want to get into politics, but the reason HK housing market being so screwed up is because of government incompetence. We have a lot of lands in HK but the government just doesn't bother to use, and instead reserves them as resort for billionaires and "aboriginal people".

  5. This is an exaggeration. There are many affordable yet spacious hotels in Hong Kong, such as the Mariott Courtyard Shatin which is just about 800-900 HKD a night for a deluxe room.

  7. Omg I was at the place close to there, called the Chung king mansions, and the room/hostel was super brutal to live in, even for a citizen of Tokyo small. The only good thing in the room I had stayed at was that the WiFi was quite fast. However, this has made me re-consider going to a uni in hongkong

    Love from Japan!

I’m in Hong Kong this week (would love to meet you if you had time), it’s super expensive true, I managed to find a place on Airbnb just like this one but with half price and awesome location, it’s called Ping On Inn 320 HKD for a night, very reasonable, hope this is useful info for anyone looking for a place here

  24. They r not lacking in space but shitty political situations.
Hk is much larger than Singapore. They were doing fine until returning to china. Greedy gov selling land to private sector and not spending on land clearing etc to build public housing. China is also limiting hk's economy, which increases the cost of living vs jobs.

  30. I think you could've gotten a much better room for the same price in a proper hotel. You should try best Western, the grand city or hotel Jen.

  32. You CAN find rooms in the 20's USD! That building, and even moreso the one in the next block The Chungking Mansion have tons of cheap places. Looks like you just walk in and let them fleece you! These rooms are bookable on almost all major booking sites. Both these places used to be rather bad, but have been fixed up over the years. Best way to find them is to go on any booking site and then search by price and map….there are easliy 50 places that go for under $30 if your at all skilled on basic net skillls. I have used those rooms a few times recently. You often check in at one place, and that one person handles check in for different hotel names. There are several different blocks A,B,C etc and the elevators only stop at certain floors so look first as to what floors they go to. Mini rooms but many have their own bath and you dont have to pay for towels. Some are actually very comfy! The bottom floor is a market with lots of semi sleazy guys calling out this and that but ignore them. Or eat there! Get over any fear it is actually a great location and a great deal. Only a fool will pay $80 next door and the Mirador Mansion has some in the same price ranges if you shop online. If you just walk in and push cash in their face, yeah your going to get FLEECED like the video showed. For a world traveler you should know better. Those 2 building have several thousand people in them and are full of little mini hotels. Individual owners put them online.

  36. i've stayed in a space smaller than that in chungking mansions, the bed was the dimensions of the room, hehe.
